This volunteer opportunity is to provide some of our HH resources for the Lighthouse of Houston Blind Fury Team this coming Saturday afternoon. We will be supplying a 20 person dragon boat, 20 paddles, and 20 PFDs for their use.
Their practice is scheduled from approximately 12:45 pm to 3:00 pm. For some of these visually impaired paddlers, this will be their first time ever being on an actual dragon boat, so having HH volunteers on hand will make this an especially meaningful and positive experience.
We are hoping to have HH volunteers help paddle one or two boats that are currently stored at Patrick’s dock area behind his house over to the dock next to the Sugar Land Rowing Club building at 15910 Creekbend Drive, Sugar Land, TX 77578. The plan is for volunteers to meet at Patrick’s dock area after our own HH water practice wraps up, grab lunch, then paddle the boat or boats over to meet the Blind Fury Team around 12:45 pm.
Ideally, we would love to have at least 4 to 5 volunteers per boat to assist with this effort. This will be the Blind Fury Team’s only real opportunity to practice on the water together in an actual dragon boat before the Austin Dragon Boat Festival on the weekend of April 25, 2026.
During our recent poolside practices, we have focused on paddling mechanics and timing, but nothing compares to being on a real dragon boat. Paddling in unison, sitting side by side, and feeling the rhythm of the boat with teammates in front of and behind you is a completely different experience.
